WEATHER AND CLIMATE: WHAT IS THE CHANCE TO SEE THE TRANSIT FROM NORWAY?

by Knut Jørgen Røed Ødegaard

Sunny weather is necessary for observations of the transit. Thin clouds cause no major problems, but may make it harder to see Venus with eclipse glasses. The transit lasts for more than 6 hours and this increases the chances of getting glimpses even in case of poor weather conditions.

June 8 belongs to a season that is usually dry and sunny in Norway. The summer has arrived, but the air is still rather dry. The transit takes place in the morning until noon and therefore before the solar heating has caused clouds and afternoon showers.

Here is a short description of the normal weather situation on June 8:

NORWAY

Early June is a favourable time of the year. Western areas are more exposed to clouds ang fog that the eastern areas. The weather statistics is best for southeastern areas ("Østlandet") and inner parts of "Vestlandet".
More about weather conditions on Østlandet (in Norwegian).

It is almost certain that several parts of Norway have sunny conditions. We will pick out 4-6 Norwegian locations that will send live images of the transit on the web sites astronomy.no and astronomi.no (in Norwegian).

OTHER COUNTRIES

In large parts of Europe the weather is improving after the winter and the spring. In particular far south in Europe the weather is already rather stable, warm and dry. But the very dry mediterranean summer climate has usually not started yet. There are therefore no place in Europe that can be guaranteed to be sunny.

In Asia conditions vary a lot from place to place and it is hard to give general advices. We will give more details later.
