MAJOR EVENT IN FROGNERPARKEN, OSLO

The historic transit of Venus on June 8, 2004 will be celebrated with a major event in one of the most beautiful parks in Europe. The public can experience the transit with eclipse glasses, telescopes and live images from several locations around Norway, displayed on a 40 m2 screen! In this national happening there will also be lots of other activities and stands with information about astronomy and other natural sciences and the final in a national science competition for children.

Opening hours for the event:

Monday June 7, 14:00 - 21:00 (2pm-9pm)
Tuesday June 8, 06:30-15.00 (06:30am-3pm)
This is the big, historic day!

The Monday will be used for preparing ourselves and the public for the historic event taking place the next morning. Eclipse glasses, information etc. will be available. In addition, numerous exciting activities are offered.

The organizers are the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Oslo, the Norwegian Astronomical Society (NAS) and the Nysgjerrigper Project of the Research Council of Norway. NAS has previously organized several major events in connection with astronomical events.

"Frognerbadet" offers several outdoor swimming pools and is situated only 100 meters from the Transit of Venus gathering. Bring your swimming gear if you want to go swimming during this historic event. Opening hours are from 07.00 to 19.30. For more information (in Norwegian), use this link.

The Frognerparken Cafe have extended opening hours and will serve food, coffee and other beverages from 11 to 23 on Monday and from 07 to 23 on Tuesday.

On the 8th of June we shall gather to marvel at the most important celestial phenomenon of modern times as the planet Venus glides across the solar disk. More than 30 organizations have joined forces for a grand celebration of a phenomenon so rare that no living being has ever witnessed it. At this gathering you will experience aliens, rocket launches, a concert, national prize announcements, a world inauguration, and several other amazing features. "NYSGJERRIGPER" OF THE YEAR DURING THE TRANSIT OF VENUS IN THE FROGNER PARK
If you are either interested in astronomy or curious about who'll receive the title "Årets Nysgjerrigper" (or both), mark tuesday June 8 in your calendar! As Venus slowly passes before the Solar disc, the most curious scientists of Norway's elementary schools will be announced. Read more.
